Betty B. Clegg-Taylor, 84, of Columbia, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013. Born January 6, 1929 in Manning, SC, she was a daughter of the late Guy Barnes and Mattie Beard Barnes. She was married to the late William Robert Clegg and Everett Gadsen Taylor. Betty retired from the Federal Government in 1995 after 35 years of service with the Selective Service System and Veterans Administration Hospital. A long-time member of College Place United Methodist Church, she devoted her gifts and talents to help build and strengthen her church community.
Betty enjoyed her Sunday school activities, singing in the choir, line dancing with the College Place Strutters, and tending to the church garden. She was happiest when spending time with her family and friends. Betty was a loving, and beloved, daughter, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother ("Memaw"), great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Always a smile on her face and a song in her heart, she will be greatly missed by her family and friends to whom she was such a blessing.
Survivors include her son, William Robert Clegg, Jr. (Debbie); daughters, Betsy Comer (Eddie), and Terri Zeman (Robert); grandsons, Jake Zeman, Brad Comer, Ryan Comer, and Tucker Clegg; granddaughters, Kerri Lynn Zeman and Lauren Desplinter; three great-grandchildren; brother, Scott Barnes; and sister, Mary Hayes; along with nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Clegg was preceded in death by her husbands, brothers, Guy, Frank, and Carl Barnes; sister, Gem Altman; and grandchildren, Luke Comer, and Allison Clegg.
A graveside service for Mrs. Clegg will be held at 2 o'clock, Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Elmwood Cemetery, 501 Elmwood Ave, Columbia, with The Rev. Tiffany Knowlin officiating.
