Billie Rice Goodall's Obituary

Mrs. Billie Rice Goodall, 91, of Columbia, died Wednesday, November 14, 2018 after a long illness. Born in Columbia on March 20, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Clough Henry Rice and Leoline Walker Rice. Billie had a great enthusiasm for art and culture, and she deeply enjoyed a life of travel and the experiences shared with her husband, the late Mr. Leon Steele Goodall. She was generous with her time and resources, serving as a volunteer with the Board of Visitors at Columbia College, and helping with the restoration of the school's guest house prior to a visit from The Hon. Sandra Day O'Connor. Billie loved collecting art and antiques. Mr. and Mrs. Goodall endowed such projects as the Goodall Gallery at Columbia College, The Visitors Lobby at The State Museum; The Goodall Bell Tower at Heathwood Hall, as well as the Goodall Environmental Center at Wofford College. She was a founding member of the Symphony League and the Columbia Study Club, and was a longtime member of the Forest Lake Club. Billie had a deep and enduring faith, and was a lifelong member of Washington Street United Methodist Church. All who knew and loved Billie, will remember and appreciate her spunk, tenacity and wit.

Mrs. Goodall is survived by her son, D. Christian Goodall and wife, Linell Morrill Goodall of Columbia; daughter, Katherine Goodall Crosthwaite and husband, B. Keith Crosthwaite of Columbia; grandchildren, Elizabeth Goodall Hartley and husband, R. Charles Hartley, Ms. Margaret Rice Goodall and her husband, Alden Livingston, Ms. Anne Morrill Goodall and her husband, LTJG Andrew Steven Anderson US Coast Guard, and John Goodall Crosthwaite; great-grandson, Henry Leon Hartley; sister, Margie Rice Crapse of Aiken; nephews, Bert and Bruce Crapse. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Leon Steele Goodall.

The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to Mrs. Goodall's caregivers, Clementine Starks, Janafer Evans, Jackie Starks, Faith Hugenin and Tameika Kencaid, as well as the staff of Wildewood Downs Long Term Care.

The memorial service for Mrs. Goodall will be held at 2 o'clock, November 20th, at Washington Street United Methodist Church, Columbia, with The Rev. Patricia J. Parrish and The Rev. Dr. William R. Childs officiating. A reception will follow. Burial in Elmwood Cemetery will be private. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
