Bridget Palmer Osborne, 96, of Columbia, died Friday, January 16, 2015. Born October 27, 1918 in Montgomery County, GA, she was a daughter of the late John P. and Maud Brantley Palmer. Ms. Osborne was a former member of Shandon Baptist Church and Grace Baptist Church. She received her BA from the Georgia State College for Women and a MA from Western Carolina. Her graduate studies were at Wake Forest University, Duke University and USC as a teacher specialist. She also attended El Insituto de Estudios Hibero Americanos in Mexico.
She taught English, Latin, French and Spanish in Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Ms. Osborne taught 20 years at Irmo High School and was head of Foreign Languages. She was affectionately known by her students as "Miz Oz".
Ms. Osborne was married to the Rev. Mark R. Osborne, Jr. for 23 years, serving as a beloved pastor's wife.
Survivors include her daughters, Elizabeth "Betsy" Johnston (Mac) and Penelope Sumter both of Columbia; grandson, Jesse Hawkins (Corene); granddaughters, Penelope Joyce Newkirk (Robert), Joanna J. Ouderkirk (Ryan), and Sydney Johnston-Hammer (Michael); great grandchildren, Forrestt, Ryan, Bridget, Anson, Connor, Alexis and Ava.
A memorial service for Ms. Osborne will be held at 5 o'clock, Tuesday, January 27th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Rd, Columbia, with Mr. Frank Brantley officiating.
