Cora Belle Eddy Jiles, 91, of Columbia, died Saturday, March 31, 2018. The daughter of the late Ernest Stewart and Erma Lemon Stewart, she was born in Girard, Illinois. In her early years Cora became a very skilled cook. As an adult she became a licensed cosmetologist and owned and operated her own business, Cora's Care and Cookin', in Bloomington, Illinois. After a short stay in Bolivia, Mrs. Jiles made her home in Columbia, SC and served several families as the household manager and cook. It was during this time she became a certified literacy teacher to help others learn to read and write.
Throughout her life Cora was an active church member and used her talents and skills to help others. She became a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in 1989 and served on numerous committees including Evangelism, Long Range Planning, Homecoming, Neighborhood Outreach, and chaired the Kitchen committee. She was the primary planner for the redesign of the kitchen and established the Bethel herb garden.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Mary Booker; grandchildren, Michelle Booker and Jason (Sarah) Booker; and a large extended family living in Illinois. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sons, Wilbur and Terry Booker; her brother, Edward Stewart; and her sister, Betty Jane Hays.
A memorial service will be held Friday, April 20th at 3:30 p.m.at Bethel United Methodist Church. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
