Elizabeth "Lib" Marvin Byrd departed this life to start her final journey on April 28, 2017. Born in Pocotaligo Township of Jasper County, SC on November 11, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Rupert Marvin, Sr. and Inez Fennell Marvin. She was predeceased by her husband of 69 years, Howard Estes Byrd; and her brothers, Samuel Rupert Marvin, Jr. and Robert Seal Marvin.

Mrs. Byrd is survived by her two children, Dr. Mary Byrd Brown of Gainesville, FL and Richard Howard Byrd (Rosemary) of Hopkins, SC. She is also survived by her three grandchildren, Dr. Thomas A. Brown, Jr. (Taylor), Peter A. "Drew" Byrd (Elizabeth), and Christopher B. Byrd (Catherine); three great-grandchildren, Perry Cate Byrd, Christopher Finn Byrd and Evangeline Bates Brown. In addition to her family, she was a second mother, grandmother and sibling to many.

Lib was a devoted member of St. James UMC, and a 50-year former member of Shandon UMC, where she served in many capacities at both churches, including terms on the administrative boards. She was an avid gardener who delightfully shared the fruits of vegetable and flower gardens with all. Lib was one of those rare folks who never met a stranger and was a friend to all. Her culinary skills and generosity were legendary, and the tasty products were also shared and appreciated by many. Although her presence will be missed, her family and friends rejoice in the fact that she is in a better place.

The service for Mrs. Byrd will be held at 2 o'clock, Saturday, May 6th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to St. James United Methodist Church, 3390 Pine Belt Road, Columbia, SC 29204, Salem United Methodist Church, 7191 Hendersonville Highway, Walterboro, SC 29488 or to Agapé Hospice House, 141 Stoneridge Drive, Columbia, SC 29210.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Atria Senior Living and Agapé Hospice House for their dedication and care given to Mrs. Byrd during the final portion of her life.
