Mr. George Allen Holladay, Sr., 95, of Chapin, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2013, surrounded by his caring and loving family
George was the son of the late William Ruthen Holladay and Ida Isabelle Huggins Holladay Owens. He was the 3rd child of 14 – a very large family.
George served in both the Army and Navy and spent time on the USS Intrepid during WWII. He was an active member of College Place United Methodist Church and helped with many Church projects over the years. Later in life, George was a member of the Boyleston Masonic Lodge in Ballentine, SC.
He created many happy memories over the course of his long life which includes teaching many people to water ski, serving as a Boy Scout Troop Master and being a dance instructor for senior citizen groups throughout the area.
George was affiliated with Standard Oil for many years and retired from a second career with Allied Chemical. After retirement, his loves were working in his yard and gardening at Lake Murray.
George is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Margaret; daughters, Linda (Willis) Jowers of Columbia, Georgie (John) DeLoach of Chapin; and son, Al (Annette) Holladay of Irmo; grandchildren, Will (Deana) Jowers, Daria (Chad) Harris, Tim (Linda) Jowers, Angela Jowers, Rachel (Robert) LeBlanc, Ben (Laura) Holladay, Brad (Becca) DeLoach; brothers, Vernon (Juanice) Holladay, Robert (Margaret) Holladay, Sammie (Pat) Holladay; and sisters, Hattie Garris, Carolyn Hardee, Mary (Jim) Watson, Willene Johnson; 14 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Will, Joe, Johnny, Lottie, Isabelle, Sallie Elizabeth, and Margaret Alice
The funeral service for Mr. Holladay will be held 2 o'clock, Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at College Place United Methodist Church, with The Reverend Tiffany D. Knowlin officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will greet friends at the church beginning at 1 o'clock. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to College Place United Methodist Church, 4801 Colonial Drive, Columbia, SC 29203.
