Geraldine Watts Mathis, 77, of Gaston, died Sunday, September 15, 2013. Born in York, SC, on April 20, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Hayward Thomas Watts and Alma Johnson Watts. An active member of Elmwood Avenue Church of God, Gerry was also a member of the Senior Group with which she loved traveling and going on cruises. She and her late husband, Edgar M. Mathis, Sr., also began the Stepping Stones Thrift Store ministry of the church, where she volunteered for many years. Gerry will be remembered as a very loving and caring person.
Survivors include her daughter, Sherry J. Marsh; step-daughters, Deborah M. Ward and Wanda M. Threatt; step-son, Edgar M. Mathis, Jr.; grandchildren, Jason and Shannon Marsh; numerous step-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas F. Watts; and dear friend, Jimmy Mayes. In addition to her parents and husband, Gerry was preceded in death by grandson, Michael Mattox; and brothers, William Q. Watts and Junior Johnson.
The funeral service for Mrs. Mathis will be held 2 o'clock, Wednesday, September 18th, at the Elmwood Avenue Church of God, 1427 Elmwood Ave, Columbia, with The Rev. Byron Powers, The Rev. Redden Thames, and Chaplain Steven Shugart officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service, beginning at 1 o'clock.
