Elgin – Hayward Samuel Christensen, 86, of Elgin, died Monday, July 24, 2017. Born on July 18, 1931, he was the son of the late Horace Edward and Bessie Louise Christensen.
Hayward, a US Army veteran, served during the Korean war and was retired from E.I. DuPont as a Supervisor. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hayward was an inspiration to all who knew him. He loved the Lord and talking with people about Him. He loved his family, fishing and hunting, and helping others.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Joan Blondell Christensen; children, Steven (Kay) Christensen of Lexington, SC, Randall Christensen of Phoenix, AZ, Bruce Christensen of Asheville, NC, Valerie Kirkley of Phoenix, AZ, and Dana (Patti) Christensen of Columbia, SC. "Grandpa" is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who he loved dearly as well a brother, Furman (Mary Jean) of Surfside Beach, SC and a sister, Marjorie Ada Peak of Rock Hill, SC. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Mark, and grandson, Kevin, sisters, Alice Branham, Lois Whittle and twin brother, Hazel.
The funeral service for Mr. Christensen will be held 11 o'clock, Thursday, July 27th, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ridgway Ward, 1391 Centerville Road, Ridgeway, conducted by Mr. Stanley Branham. Burial will follow in Centerville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Wednesday evening at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia.
