Helen Hutto Brabham, age 94, of Columbia, died Friday evening, May 13, 2016. She was the widow of the late Rev'd A. McKay Brabham, Jr. and the daughter of the late William Walter and Pearl Felder Hutto of St. George, SC. She and her husband served South Carolina churches in Grover, North Charleston, Aiken, Union, and Columbia during his 45 years as a Methodist minister.
With degrees in music from Winthrop College and Columbia University, she was her husband's true partner in their church work, at various times directing the choirs, singing solos, playing the organ, teaching voice and piano, and bringing a high level of professionalism to the music programs of their churches. After her husband's retirement, she was a devoted and loyal member of Shandon United Methodist Church, where she was active in the United Methodist Women, loved singing in the choir, served on many committees, and was a strong supporter of all things Shandon, especially the choir.
She was a loving wife and doting mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her younger son, William Hutto Brabham, and is survived by her son, Angus McKay Brabham, III and his wife, Gene; granddaughter, Margaret Westmoreland Brabham; grandsons, Angus McKay Brabham, IV and his wife, Heather, Heyward Clarkson Brabham and his wife, Carole, and William Walter Brabham and his wife, Margaret; and great-grandchildren, McKay, Clay, Nates, Rhett, Peden, Liam, Warren, Nan, and Sophie.
A family burial service will be held in St. George, South Carolina at the UDC Cemetery at 11:00 o'clock, Tuesday, May 17th. At 3:00 o'clock, there will be a memorial service at Shandon United Methodist Church in Columbia, with visitation in the church fellowship hall immediately after the service. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
