James M. Griggs, 86, of Columbia, died Saturday, May 17, 2014. Born June 1, 1927, in Hartsville, SC, he was a son of the late Wylie S. Griggs and Nettie Blackwell Griggs. A veteran of the US Army, James worked with Tri-City Heating and Air.

Survivors include his wife, Eulysis Hawkins Griggs; daughter, Shirley G. (Wayne) Watts of Gaston; son, Michaell R. (Vicki) Griggs of Piedmont; grandchildren, Heather Haas, Michelle English, Kimberly Dover; great grandchildren, Chase and Skylar Haas; sister, Elise Johnson of Hartsville; and a number of nephews and nieces, including Rev. Nina Reynolds. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his daughter, Freida L. Griggs; granddaughter, Susan Branham; brother, Carl Griggs; and sisters, Edith Griggs, Cecile Griggs and Aileen McLaughlin.

The funeral service for Mr. Griggs will be held 11 o'clock, Wednesday, May 21st, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Dr, Columbia, with The Rev. Nina Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10 o'clock.
