Columbia: Mayo Elliott Anderson, 71, of Columbia, died Friday, August 24, 2012. Born on August 1, 1941, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Wyatt Blair Elliott and Lochie Kathleen Carlisle Elliott. Mrs. Anderson received a BA from Erskine College after which she graduated Appalachian State University with a master's degree in early childhood education and taught at Denny Terrace Elementary School in Columbia. After retirement from Richland School District One, she worked for G. T. Powers & Associates where she was employed at the time of her death. She was an avid bridge player for over 40 years, a member of Alpha Delta Kappa International, an organization for women educators, and also The First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her children, Gary E. "Andy" Anderson, Jr. and wife, Lara, of Columbia, Jennie Anderson Edwards and husband, Brian, of Florence, and Julie Anderson Swanson and husband, Luke, of Fort Mill, SC; her grandchildren whom she adored, Maleah Catherine Anderson and Ashlyn Grace Anderson, both of Columbia, Foster Anderson Swanson, Banks Zumwalt Swanson, Sam Elliott Swanson all of Fort Mill, SC, Carlisle Victoria Edwards, Evelyn Annette Edwards, Vivian Mercy Edwards, and Eleanor Bliss Edwards all of Florence. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her husband, Gary E. Anderson; and brothers, Richard Jackson Elliott and Wyatt Bruce Elliott.
A memorial service for Mrs. Anderson will be held at 11 o'clock, Tuesday, August 28th at First Presbyterian Church with burial to follow in the Churchyard, after which the family will greet friends in Jackson Hall. The Rev. L. Craig Wilkes and The Rev. David H. Lauten will officiate. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.
