Murray Guinn Benton, 80, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2023 in Columbia, SC. He was born in February 21, 1943, in Bradenton, FL to the late William Woodson and Leitha Guinn Benton. Murray grew up in Arcadia, Florida and was a member of the Desoto County High School Class of 1961. He attended St. Leo College in St. Leo, FL as well as Massey Technical Institute and Jones College in Jacksonville, FL. He resided in Arcadia Florida for 50 years.
He was president of Arcadia-Punta Gorda Broadcasting Company as "Furry Murray" with WOKD/WAPG. He was also active with the Lions Club in Arcadia for many years.
Murray later met his second wife, Lynda Gayle, at a singles retreat at Central Florida Bible Camp, Eustis, FL. He moved to Jacksonville Florida, where he was employed with Bellsouth Mobility and ADT Wireless. Together, the couple moved to South Carolina in July of 2009 where they became very active at St. Andrews Road Church of Christ.
He is survived by his wife Lynda Gayle Benton, and children Bill(Trudy)Benton, of Avon Park, FL; Kimberly(Ken)Barkley, of Port Charlotte, FL; Jason Boddie and Eddie (Sarah)Harris, both of Jacksonville, FL; Kim Boddie, of Columbia SC; as well as grandchildren, Brad, Kenny, Abby, Ella, Ashley, Zachary, Jordan, Zane, Nathan, Noah, Emma; great grandchildren Willow, Holden and Rosie.
He is preceded in death by his first wife of 26 years Ruth Marcum Benton.
The service for Mr. Benton will be held 3 o'clock, Sunday, June 4th, at St. Andrews Road Church of Christ, 425 St. Andrews Road, Columbia. Elder John Dennison will officiate. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church beginning at 2 o'clock. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
Burial will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Arcadia, FL, directed by Ponger-Kays-Grady Funeral Home of Arcadia, FL at a later date.
Memorials may be made to St. Andrews Road Church of Christ, or to Central Florida Bible Camp.
