Rachel Rogers Jennings, 88, widow of Alton R. Jennings, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2017. Born in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Isaiah "Buddy" and Hannah Rogers and was the last surviving of 10 siblings.
Rachel was a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church since 1952, where she lovingly taught children's Sunday school. Due to health reasons, she was inactive for some time, although she attended church with her children when she was able. A truly unselfish lady, she was known for tending to the needs of others. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She never forgot a birthday, an anniversary, or anyone's favorite food. Rachel had her own card ministry, and not just for special occasions. Her cards lifted the spirits of many who were sick, down in the dumps, and those she simply had on her mind. She was always there when you needed her. Rachel loved to cook and if she had been president there would be no hunger in the world.
Surviving are her son, Andrew "Andy" Jennings (Jo Ann) of Batesburg; daughters, Frances Boyle (Ken) of Aiken, and Shirley Banks (Johnny) of Columbia; grandchildren, Tracy Coakley (Tim) of Aiken, Matthew Boyle (Brittany) of Ridge Springs, Bobby Banks (Sherri) of Columbia and Cynthia Piper of Columbia; seven great-grandchildren children, Chase & Rachel Coakley of Aiken, Sarah Boyle of Ridge Springs, Samantha & Isabelle Piper of Columbia, Karen and Daniel McCurry of Columbia; one great-great-grandchild, Maddie Grimmett. Also surviving are a special aunt, Sophia Sanders, and her two best friends, Betty Gibson and Margie Gay.
The graveside service for Mrs. Jennings will be held at 11 o'clock, Wednesday, September 6th at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Lee Butler. A visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia.
The Family wishes to thank Dr. Keith Bridgers, Dr. James O'Leary, Dr. R.V. Harrison, Laura Craig, FNP, MN as well as the staff of Agape Hospice House – Stoneridge, for all their love and care.
