Funeral services for Sylvia Derrick Cannon, 85, widow of James Magnus Cannon, will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at Ascension Lutheran Church with The Rev. Ronald N. Brown and Minister Jackie Utley officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery & Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 2, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the church. Memorials may be made to Ascension Lutheran Church, 827 Wildwood Ave, Columbia, SC 29203.


Mrs. Cannon was born June 26, 1927 in Little Mountain, SC and passed away on Monday, October 1, 2012. She was a daughter of the late George Benton & Winton Keaton Derrick. A graduate from Chapin High School in 1944, she worked as a Bookkeeper at Service Finance Company and a File Clerk at Fort Jackson. Mrs. Cannon was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her son, Mike Cannon; daughters, Pat Martin and her husband Bob, Donna Clark, Barbara Powell and her fiancé Foy Smith, and Missy Cannon and her partner Meg Ellis; grandchildren, Bobby, Scott (Diana) & Ryan (Joanne) Martin, Jason (Kelli) & Justin Powell, Brandon & Adrian Cannon and her fiancé Josh Ward, Seth Cannon and Jayden Ellis; great-grandsons, Brian, Collin, Jacob & Michael Martin; brother-in-law, Ray Cannon; sisters-in-law, Georgia Lee Cannon and Maude Cannon; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Rita Ann Derrick Goodwin.


The family is grateful for the care and concern of the staff of Harmony Hospice, especially, Don, Kaye, Sue, and "T"; and caregivers, Bridgette, Jennifer, Kyra, Tamika and Maude.
