Mr. Vernon Oeland Daughtry's Obituary

Vernon Oeland Daughtry, 95, of Columbia, died at home, Sunday, October 19, 2015. Born May 25, 1920, in Charleston, SC, he was a son of the late Spier W. and Mattie Viola Oeland Daughtry. Vernon served his country in the US Army, as a sergeant in the 4th Signal Battalion, Charlie Co., 2nd Platoon, Team 6 during World War II, and was redeployed during the Korean War as part of the 3nrd Infantry Division. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, the AB Ferguson Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Men.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Helen Walker Daughtry; daughters, Deborah Leverette (Dennis), Rebecca Daughtry (Charles Haywood); his son, Marty Daughtry (Terri); grandchildren, Elizabeth Leverette, Dennis Arthur Leverette, Jr., Ben Daughtry, Kathryn Daughtry, Ransom Haywood and Walker Haywood; great grandchildren, Landon and Arianni Daughtry; children of his heart, Bobbie Paulling, Paula and Dick Paulling, Betty Savage; and numerous loving nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his brother, Spier Daughtry, Jr.; and his sister, Robertine Moore.

The funeral service for Mr. Daughtry will be held 2 o'clock, Wednesday, October 21st, at Main Street United Methodist Church, with The Rev. Dr. Robert Walker and The Rev. Joe Cal Watson officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, 501 Elmwood Ave, Columbia. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock, at Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, 5202 Colonial Dr, Columbia. Memorials may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church, 1830 Main St, Columbia, SC 29201; or to the Humane Society, 121 Humane Ln, Columbia, SC 29209.

The family would like to thank Mr. Daughtry's caregivers, Sadie Hall and Valeria Webb, as well as Rest Assured Hospice of Columbia for their care and support.
