Mrs. Ann "Penny" Penniman Powell

Ann “Penny” Penniman Powell, widow of John Key Powell, died Tuesday, June 2, 2015. Born in Dallas, Texas on December 21, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Allen Penniman and Theodora Elliott Penniman Landrum. She attended Highland Park High School in Dallas and spent her first year in college in New York City. Ann returned to Dallas and graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1950 and married John Key Powell later that year. They lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Lubbock, Texas, and Boston, before moving to Columbia in 1959. She was a full time housewife, raised three children, and was a great support and inspiration to her husband. She was a member of The First Presbyterian Church, serving on several committees, the Columbia Garden Club, the Columbia Junior League, Sewing Club, Palmetto Club, Forest Lake Club, and a multiple Paul Harris Fellow supporting the Rotary Club of Columbia. Penny was completely devoted to her late husband, Key, and traveled with him on his numerous business ventures and around the world. In her younger years, she loved to garden, cook, entertain their numerous friends, and dedicated her life to the needs of her children and grandchildren. Penny is survived by her children, Nena Ann Powell Rice of Columbia, Scott Key Powell of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Elliott Edward Powell and wife, Elizabeth “Betsy” Champion Powell, of Columbia; grandchildren, Jessica Marie Powell Ericson and husband, Steve, of Fort Collins, Colorado, John Key Powell II, Parker Champion Powell, and Austin Elliott Powell, all of Columbia; a nephew, Berkeley Key Powell and wife, Kimberly, and their son, Colin, and daughter, Claire, of Houston; and a niece, Barbara Key Powell of Dover, Delaware. Due to renovations at The First Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Powell’s service will be held 11:30 o’clock, Friday, June 5th, at Washington Street United Methodist Church, 1401 Washington Street, Columbia, with Dr. Derek W. H. Thomas and Dr. Mark E. Ross officiating. Following the service the family will greet friends in Jackson Hall of The First Presbyterian Church, just across Washington Street. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery will be private with The Rev. L. Craig Wilkes officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to The First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion St, Columbia, SC 29201, the Columbia Rotary Club Foundation, 715 Betsy Drive, Columbia, SC 29210 or the Salvation Army of the Midlands, PO Box 2786, Columbia, SC 29202. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
