Mr. Davis Sanders Self, 74, of Columbia, died Tuesday, June 14, 2016 after fighting a short but courageous battle with cancer. Born in Flat Creek, SC on November 23, 1941, he was a son of the late Benjamin Franklin Self and Emily Mahaffey Self. Davis proudly served in the US Army 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam, and remained actively involved in veteran's groups throughout his life. He was a member of DAV, a founding member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, and the American Legion Riders of Post 6, VFW Post 641, and the Carolina Chapter of the 101st Association. Davis worked for many years as an electrician, and he was passionate about fair treatment for workers. He was a member of Labor Union 1293 Laborers and he retired from IBEW Labor Union 379. Davis was always active in the community, and he treasured the friendships he shared in the Dentsville Masonic Lodge #398, the York Rite, the Columbia Chapter of the Combat Infantry Association, life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 402, and as a charter member of Jamil Shrine. Davis touched many lives and he will be deeply missed by his family and dear friends.
Davis is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary Vick D'Antonio Self; son, Rob Levin; daughter, Crystal Self; brothers, J.E. Self, Joe Self, and Jerry Self; and sister, Warneda Sims. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Paul William Self, Cecil Mahuffey Self, Raymond Self, and Robert Franklin Self; and sisters, Mildred Brewer, and Helen Haynes.
A funeral for Mr. Self will be held 12:30 o'clock, Monday, June 20th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Rd. Ext. Interment with military honors will follow at 2 o'clock at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, prior to the service, beginning at 11 o'clock.
