Obituary

Gerald Henson Warr, 90, passed away July 3, 2018. He was born June 18, 1928 to Roland Lovell Warr and Eunice Henson Warr. He was pre-deceased by his parents and his brother William Mallory Warr of San Diego, CA. He is survived by his widow, Edith Thompson Warr; children Ann Hollis (J.D.), Lynn Onley (Harry), David Warr and Dianne Mirmow (Dwight). His grandchildren are Whitney Champion, (Adam) Meredith and Blaire Mirmow, and Michelle and Derrick Onley. His two great grandchildren are Jax and Sloane Champion.

Mr. Warr was born in Florence, SC, but also lived in Macon, Ga., Hartsville, SC, and Columbia, SC. He was a 1945 graduate of Dreher High School and then attended the University of South Carolina, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. His USC degree was earned through a winding 12 year path that included working, attending classes and raising a family of four.

His lifelong love of radios led him to become a ham radio operator and instructor and earned his First Class Radiotelephone License in October,1951. He enjoyed a variety of positions in radio and television including WNOK, Channel 25 and Channel 67 to name a few. After earning his engineering degree he worked for GE, developing motor start capacitors and "tube type" TVs. Mr. Warr took great pride in the work he did at GE, but opted to stay in South Carolina rather than move with the company to Buffalo, NY which led him to his position at South Carolina Educational Television. He began his career with ETV in 1967, supervising the entire transmitter system which consisted of 11 television stations and 8 FM stations. Mr. Warr designed and built the transmitter facilities for Greenwood, Greenville, Spartanburg, Sumter, Conway, Charleston, Beaufort and Rock Hill. He also designed and built eight transmitter facilities, as well as satellite and microwave systems for SC ETV.

In 1976, Mr. Warr was instrumental in helping Columbia Bible College (now Columbia International University) get their new radio station on the air. The call letters were WMHK and stood for We Make Him Known.

Mr.Warr was a dedicated member of Colonial Heights Baptist church. He taught Sunday School, served as a deacon, council member and Sunday School Superintendent.

After his retirement in 1992, he continued his fascination and enjoyment of radios and computers. He also spent many years researching and organizing his family genealogy.

A special thank you to Milton Hersey, Rusty Rhodes and RJ Kennedy, supportive friends for many years. The family would also like to say a special thank you to his caregivers, Carmella and Tasha. Their kindness and devotion allowed him to remain in the comfort of his home of 59 years.

The graveside service for Mr. Warr will be held 10 o'clock, Friday, July 6th, at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens, 2603 Two Notch Road, Columbia. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
