Obituary

Joyce B. Steele, 89, of Columbia, died Monday, March 28, 2022. Born February 20, 1933, in Clark County, Kentucky, she was the youngest of seven children of the late Henry Stokely and Florene Bunch Stokely.

Mrs. Steele was the wife of the late CSM Clarence Steele, Jr., US Army (Ret.). While her husband was serving the country, she was efficiently managing their household and raising three children. Mrs. Steele was a faithful Christian and a long-standing member of Rosewood Baptist Church. She dedicated her time at the church by teaching Sunday school, vacation bible school, as well as the Women's Mission Union (WMU). Mrs. Steele was gifted athletically, and she especially enjoyed playing golf and bowling. Later in life, some of her fondest memories were of traveling with her family and friends. Being a cancer survivor for over 30 years, her family found great strength in Mrs. Steele's love for God, courage, and perseverance.

Survivors include her three children, Ronnie Steele (Lisa) of Madison, AL, Karen Miller (David) of Columbia, SC, and Teresa Duance (Michael) of Sherrills Ford, NC; sister, Jessie Chaney of Florida; grandchildren, Chris Moon (Melodie), Erin Moon, Tyler Steele (Nichole), and Heather Steele; great grandson, Nicholas Hassell; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, CSM Clarence Steele, Jr., US Army (Ret.), and five siblings, Malcolm Stokely, Eugene Stokely, Anna Bradley, Julia Pasley, and Geneva Shackelford.

The graveside service for Mrs. Steele will be held at 11 o'clock, Wednesday, April 6th, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC. The Rev. Richard Humphries will be officiating. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Home Care Solutions, Wildewood Downs, and Amedisys Hospice for their devoted care of Mrs. Steele.
