Mr. Luther "Luke" Fowler Jr.

Luther Fowler, Jr., 90, passed from this life on Thursday, September 29th, joining his beloved wife, Vera, who left us on September 9th. Inseparable in life, they are together again. Born in Florence, SC, Luke was the son of the late Luther Fowler, Sr. and Mamie Anderson Fowler. He was the youngest of five siblings, all of whom are predeceased. Luke loved old movies, especially cowboy movies. When he was a little boy, his mother slipped him quarters from the till in his dad’s store and he would spend entire Saturdays mesmerized by the westerns. Favorites included Red Ryder and the Lone Ranger, but never John Wayne. As a very young man, Luke loved tagging along with his older brother whose job took him to the beach. They frequented the dance clubs and Luke’s lifelong love of dancing was born. When he met Vera, who also loved dancing, he met his true partner. Luke loved a good joke or comic and even drew his own comics from time to time. Outgoing and friendly by nature, he never met a stranger and was happily flirtatious with all the ladies. Luke joined the army in 1944 and served with the 343rd Infantry in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. After marrying in 1949, Luke and Vera moved to Columbia to attend the University of South Carolina, where he majored in accounting. After graduation, he remained in Columbia, launching his career in banking and raising his family. Shortly after moving to Columbia, Luke and Vera joined Park Street Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon. Luke is survived by his daughters Anne Wade (Stephen) of Columbia, Gail Blumberg of Atlanta, GA, and his son John Fowler (Sherry) of Elgin, SC. Luke has four grandchildren: Caroline Ledford (Mike) of Charleston, SC, Elizabeth Mayhew (Jared) of Hemingway, SC, Sydney Blumberg of Charleston, SC, and Nate Blumberg of Atlanta, GA. He also has two great-grandchildren: Stamps Mayhew and Presley Mayhew of Hemingway, SC. A funeral service will be held 4 o'clock, Saturday, October 8th at Park Street Baptist Church, 2204 Park Street, Columbia, with The Rev. Jay Black and The Rev. Lee Brookins officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 3 o'clock. Burial in Fort Jackson National Cemetery will be held at a later date. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of B Wing at Presbyterian Home and Agape Hospice House for all their kindnesses to our father while in their care.
