CAPT Michael Wayne Peyton

Captain Michael Wayne Peyton, a devoted husband, beloved father, cherished grandfather, and proud veteran, passed away on March 3, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, laughter, and love. After graduating high school, Michael began his military career, where he developed his expertise in aviation and air traffic control. While in service, he pursued his education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, balancing duty and studies with unwavering commitment. As an air traffic controller, he played a vital role in ensuring the safety of countless missions, including deployments during Desert Storm and Desert Shield. He retired honorably from the U.S. Air Force in 1992 but continued to serve in a different capacity as a government contractor, taking on assignments in Japan, Hawaii, and Qatar, where he embraced new adventures and formed lifelong friendships. While his professional achievements were remarkable, Michael was best known for the warmth, humor, and joy he brought to those around him. Affectionately called “Big Mike,” he was the life of the party, lighting up every room with his infectious laughter and larger-than-life presence. But above all, he was a devoted family man, a steadfast pillar of love and guidance to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. As “PaPa,” he took immense pride in his growing family, offering wisdom, joy, and unconditional love to each new generation. Michael is preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Louis and Alice Bamburg, his mother, Lucille Warren, his father, Raleigh Peyton, his brother, Jay Warren, and his nephew Evan Niette. He is survived by his loving wife, Rose Peyton; his children, Josh Peyton, Gabe Peyton, Regina Fletcher, and Richard McKellips; his daughters-in-law, Rachel Peyton, Shauna Peyton, and Barbara McKellips; his son-in-law, Tom Fletcher; and his siblings, Denise Niette and Lane Warren. He also leaves behind a proud and ever-growing legacy in his grandchildren—Logan, Austin, Jaydin, Savannah, Harper, Petra, Jackson, Kayla, Tyler, Abigail, and Hannah.—as well as his great-grandchildren, Greysen, Evie, Pete, Scotty, Landon, Annsleigh, Charleigh, Finnan, Ellanor, Harper, and Amelia. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Cobblestone Park Clubhouse on Wednesday, March 12, at 2 PM. We are honored that Mayor Mike Ross will share a few words, and friends and family are also invited to do the same as we celebrate his memory with stories, laughter, and love-the way he would have wanted. Captain Michael Wayne Peyton’s final resting place will be at Arlington National Cemetery, a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to his country and family. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and the sky will always be a little brighter because of him.
