Mrs. Rebecca G. Futrell

Rebecca Gregory Futrell, 93, of Columbia, formerly of Laurens, SC, passed away on Friday, December 25, 2020. Mrs. Futrell was born in the parsonage of Roebuck Baptist Church on February 19, 1927 to the late Rev. and Mrs. Harry H. Gregory Sr. Rebecca graduated from Pauline High School and went on to attend and earn her degree at Women’s College of Furman University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminar. While she was a student at Women’s College, she met a student, Christopher Jefferson “Jeff” Futrell Jr, at Furman University, who would later become her husband. They went to Fort Worth, Texas to attend Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mr. Futrell went on to become a pastor and they lived in Bethune, SC and later, Blythewood, SC. As he began ministering with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, Rebecca became an active part of the disciplinary training and church library. Rebecca also worked as a librarian in several school districts, including two in Richland School District 1. She participated in the planning of a church which became Riverland Hills Baptist Church in Columbia, SC. Those close to Ms. Rebecca knew that one of her most favorite sayings was, “WWJD” Upon retiring, the Futrells’ moved to the Martha Franks Retirement Community in Laurens, SC. Rebecca is survived by son, Chris (Pam) Futrell; four grandchildren; three great- grandchildren with a fourth great- grandchild on the way; and special caregiver Susan, who took care of Rebecca for many years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, The Rev. Christopher Jefferson “Jeff” Futrell, Jr.; son, Joel Gregory Futrell; two brothers; and four sisters. The family would like to thank Columbia Community Hospice House - Agape Care and staff at 141 Stoneridge Dr. for the excellent care they gave Rebecca in her final days. A graveside service will be held 1 o’clock, Wednesday, January 6, 2021, at Southland Memorial Gardens, 700 W. Dunbar Rd., West Columbia. All are invited to attend; however, masks are required, and social distancing is enforced to maintain a safe environment for all.
