Thelma Jacobs Turpin, 98, of Columbia, died on Tuesday, May 24, 2022 and entered her heavenly home to sit at the right hand of Jesus. Born in Great Falls, SC, on August 26, 1923, she was a daughter of the late Glenn Thomas and Leila Ray Jacobs.
Mrs. Turpin was raised in Pontiac, SC, with her 11 siblings and completed Drones Business College. She was a faithful Sunday School teacher for many years at Greenlawn Baptist Church and Earlewood Baptist Church. Her career was spent with many years as a bookkeeper for the Market Restaurant and later as the church secretary for Fairlawn United Methodist Church. Golden Girls were never missed, and Beauty Parlor was a frequent activity with her granddaughter, Johanna. Thelma never missed sending a special birthday card to her family or church friends.
Survivors include her daughter, Lana Turpin Ott; granddaughter, Johanna Ott Gimpel (Gregory); sisters, Juanita Lasley, Octavia Peake and Sara Peake; brother, Donnie Jacobs (Lois); son-in-law, Robert Clifton Ott; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members; and her special grand-dog, Jasper. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Gilbert Turpin; son, Fredrick G. Turpin; siblings, Dorothy Porth, Louise Hughes, Gilbert Jacobs, Elton Jacobs, Frank Jacobs, Tootsie Tidwell and Charlie Jacobs.
The funeral service for Mrs. Turpin will be held at 3 o'clock, Friday, May 27th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, with the Rev. Greg Dowey officiating. Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 2 o'clock.
