Dr. William Jennings Strohecker

William Jennings Strohecker died peacefully on Monday, July 17, 2017 at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community. A loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, he will be missed dearly by his devoted family. He was the son of the late Permelia Jennings and Scott Carson Strohecker. Bill was born on April 29, 1926 in Columbia, South Carolina. After graduating from Dreher High School, he entered The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. He left school to join the Navy as a pharmacist mate during World War II. While stationed on Long Island, he met his wife of 72 years, Betty Jane Savage, of Framingham, Massachusetts. He returned to The Citadel and graduated in 1949. Bill entered the Medical College of South Carolina, where he earned a medical degree in 1953. An internship followed at the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. Returning to Columbia, he began the practice of family medicine. In 1965, he joined the Columbia Hospital (now Palmetto Health) where he served as an emergency medicine physician until his retirement in 1990. Bill enjoyed flying, and was a member of the Air Force Reserve in which he served as a flight surgeon. He was President of the MUSC Alumni Association, and was President of the Golden K(Kiwanis) Club. He was a member of the Tarantella Dance Club, and enjoyed golf in his later years. Bill liked to travel with Betty, and together they visited most of the world. He loved spending time with his family and was a long-time member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his children, Diane Strohecker Loeble (Bill) of Covington, Georgia, James Scott Strohecker (Marie) of Columbia, South Carolina, and William Jennings “Jay” Strohecker, Jr. (Retta) of Chapin, South Carolina; grandchildren, William Dexter Loeble, III (Jolie) of Hoboken, New Jersey, Janet Loeble Burtts of Covington, Georgia, Stephanie Strohecker Goe (Brian) of Tampa, Florida, Scott Carson Strohecker (Lissa) of Maui, Hawaii, Elizabeth Strohecker Ullman (Mark) of Lexington, South Carolina, Beaumont Barre Covert (Wayne “Jabo”) of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Randall Stewart Barre (Griffith “Grif”) of Kershaw, South Carolina; 13 great grandchildren, William Dexter Loeble, IV, Antonio “Tony” Burtts, Nakimrey “Kim” Janae Burtts, Haylee Sierra Burtts, Conrad Eliot Strohecker, Katherine Anne “Hattie” Strohecker, Mark Williams Ullman, III, Scott Thomas Ullman, Madison “Maddie” Saunders Covert, Sophia “Sophie” Marie Beaumont Covert, Madeline Griffith Richmond, John Stewart Barre, and Lyles Elizabeth Barre. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Scott Thomas Strohecker. Following a private burial, the family will receive friends in The Atrium at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, 1 Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia, from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m., on Thursday, July 20th. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family. The family would like to give special thanks to Hector Garcia and the caregivers at the Jane Bruce Guignard Healthcare Neighborhood, and the Rosalie Bomar Care Neighborhood at Still Hopes.
