1SG Malcom K. Smith, Jr., US Army (Ret.), 75, of Columbia, died Friday, September 1, 2023. Born November 28, 1947, in Augusta, Maine, he was a son of the late Malcolm K. Smith, Sr. and June Lane Smith. He was a military veteran of 26 years, having served three tours of duty in Vietnam. 1SG Smith obtained numerous medals and awards, including the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart, as well as many more.
He retired as a First Sargent and went on to work for AMVETS, as a service officer before completely retiring in 2010. He was a member of the Combat Infantrymen's Association and the Purple Heart Association. Other than his family, his other greatest passion was deer hunting and being among his dearest hunting buddies Mike Driver, Gerry Murphy, and Dana Campbell.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Smith; daughter, Emily Morris (Trey); son, Gregory Smith; granddaughter, Ashari Smith; brothers, Bobby Smith and Gary Smith; sisters, Patti Cross and Valerie LeJoie; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and his faithful companion, Krissi.
The graveside service for 1SG Smith will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday, September 7th, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 4 until 6 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC.
