Obituary

1SG David T. Reed, US Army (Ret.), 88, of Elgin, died Thursday, August 4, 2022. Born April 27, 1934, in Whitmire, SC, he was the son of the late A. Ernest Reed and Eva Grace Reed.

Mr. Reed enlisted in the South Carolina National Guard and served 7 years prior to his enlistment in the US Army. He served his country honorably for the next twenty one years, until his retirement in 1978. While in the US Army, he completed two tours of duty in Vietnam and received many commendations: including, two Bronze Star Medals with Oak Leaf Cluster with V Device with Valor, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal with third Oak Leaf Cluster with V Device for Valor, Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Three Overseas Bars, and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. Following his military career, Mr. Reed was employed in the engineering department at Providence Hospital for 20 years.

Mr. Reed enjoyed being outside, especially when he had the opportunity to hunt or go to the shooting range. He was a champion marksman and held two NRA recognized 1000-yard national records. His greatest accomplishment in life was his family and he cherished every moment spent with them.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Lloyd Reed; son, Michael Reed (Bonnie); daughter, Susan Reed Hebert (Russel L.); stepdaughters, Deborah Truell Mungo (Robert) and Cheryl Cottingham; stepson, B. Adam Justice; brother, William E. Reed (Kim); grandchildren, Caleb Reed, Daniel Reed, James Reed, Samuel Reed, Caroline Reed, Rosemary Reed, Robin Reed, Russel J. Hebert, Cole McWhirter, Christopher Truell, Joshua Truell, Chase Mungo and Blake Justice, Sarah Hebert, Elizabeth Green, Kathleen Cottingham and Grace Justice; as well as his great grandchildren Elijah McWhirter, Shelby McWhirter, Aurora Steinbeck, Arabella Steinbeck, Riley Green, Eli Justice and Mason James Reed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by (wife) Norma Jean Reed.

The funeral service for Mr. Reed will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday, August 7th Blaney Baptist Church, 1400 Blaney Road, Elgin, with the Rev. Jacob Helsley Officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Greenhaven Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends prior to service in the church sanctuary beginning at 2 o'clock. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.

Serving as pallbearers will be his grandsons and serving as honorary pallbearers will be his granddaughters.
