Mrs. Betty Murphy Adams

Betty Murphy Adams, 88, of Herndon, VA, died on Saturday, April 23, 2022. Born in Charlotte, NC, on September 14, 1933, she was a daughter of the late D.D. Murphy and Ruth Kirksey Edwards Murphy. As a young lady, Mrs. Adams worshipped at Incarnation Lutheran Church in Columbia, SC. After attending college, her adventurous personality led her to take a job with the Air Force in Las Vegas, NV before moving to the D.C area where she worked for the country’s first planned community in Reston, VA. Mrs. Adams loved her job with Senator Daniel Inouye (D-HI) and the highlight of that job was a staff trip to Hawaii. In 1970, she married Edwin (Ned) Adams, Jr. and they had their daughter, Jennifer, in 1971. She devoted herself to raising her daughter. Mrs. Adams, her husband, Ned, and their daughter retired to Charleston, SC in 1988. She found a passion in volunteering at the Medical University of South Carolina and volunteered there for 25 years. Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer W. Adams; sister, Doris Garber; and cousin, Johnny Wade. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin H. Adams, Jr; brother, Robert Murphy; brother-in-law, Leon Garber, and sister-in-law, Christine Murphy. She is also survived by 12 nieces and nephews and their families. The funeral service for Mrs. Adams will be held at 11 o’clock, Thursday April 28th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 10 o’clock. Burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park will be private. Memorial donations may be made to the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina.
