A native and lifelong resident of Columbia, Miss Lucas was born on October 29, 1926. She was a daughter of the late George Hampton, Sr. and Marie Keels Lucas. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, George Hampton Lucas, Jr. and sister, Marie Elizabeth Lucas. She is survived by her niece, Ann Lucas Gordon and nephew, George Hampton Lucas, III. In April of 1939, she became a member of Eau Claire Baptist church at the age of 10. During her many years of active membership there, she served on staff as pianist for a number of years and a brief time as the interim choir director. Miss Lucas taught Sunday School, served on many committees, and was a member of the Senior Adult XYZ organization. She worked with Russian and Spanish speaking people as a part of the church “English as a Second Language” program. She assisted in Vacation Bible School, in church festivals for children and youth and was a faithful member of the Adult Choir. Miss Lucas was a teacher for many years at Eau Claire High School in Columbia where she helped many a Shamrock with their English grammar before her retirement. Miss Lucas was also very active member of her retired teachers’ organization. Her church family is sorrowed by her passing, while claiming the promise that we will one day see her again.
