On August 15, 2018, David Anthony Mitchell, Sr. of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away at 72 years old with his wife of 49 years by his side. His jovial personality will be missed greatly by all who knew him.
Born on September 27, 1945, David was a man of devout faith in Jesus Christ. He was a member of Colonial Heights Baptist Church (now New Heights Church) where he served as part-time director of music for nearly 20 years, as well as numerous other capacities. He was a voice for the National Weather Service and then South Carolina Public Radio where he was Mastering Engineer of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz on NPR.
He was preceded in death by his parents James Martin Mitchell and Bonnie Watts Mitchell, and sister Phyllis Mitchell Berry. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Outlaw Mitchell; sons David (Kelly) Mitchell, Jason Mitchell, and Benjamin (Bethany) Mitchell; grandson Graham Mitchell; brother James Martin Mitchell, Jr.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family that he loved very much.
A memorial service will be held at 3PM on Saturday, August 18, at New Heights Church, 5501 Broad River Road, Columbia SC 29212, with a visitation and reception to follow. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to New Heights Church, or the South Carolina ETV Endowment.
