Helen Lewis Carter, 82, of Columbia, died Thursday, December 17, 2020. Born in Fort Lawn, SC, on February 22, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Henry Grady and Mary Bell McWaters Roddey. Helen was a graduate of Great Falls High School and spent her life as a Real Estate Agent. She enjoyed time with her family, especially with her husband, James. Together they often traveled over the state and spent time at the beach vacationing and shopping. Twice daily, Helen talked to her beloved sister, Nanci and they both cherished the times spent on the phone checking on each other. Survivors include her adored husband of 38 years, James H. Carter; and a sister, Nanci Roddey Zeigler; children, James H. Carter, Jr. (Erin), Mark R. Carter (Mandy), and Mary Leslie Carter Howe (Mark). In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings, Roy Grady Roddey, James Wilbur Roddey, Hewlette O’Neal Roddey, Peggy Jean Roddey Wilson, and Ruthie Roddey Ballington. The funeral service for Mrs. Carter will be held 11 o’clock, Monday, December 21st, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 10 o’clock.
