CSM James Henry Whetzel, US Army (Ret.), 78, died Saturday, September 25, 2021. Born on December 24, 1942, in Luke, Maryland, he was a son of the late Beryle and Ura Whetzel. James enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood working, family and helping others. He honorably served his country in the United States Army where he retired in 1988. Survivors include his wife, Adelheid Ladner Whetzel; sons, Warrant Officer James Dean Whetzel (Deborah), David Whetzel and Robert Whetzel (Kathy); a daughter, Wanita Whetzel Mason; grandchildren, Nathan Whetzel, Timothy Whetzel (Angel), David Whetzel, Jr, Katherine Whetzel and Anna Whetzel, Michael Whetzel, Jr., Adam Whetzel (Misty), and Chad Benenhaley; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Gabriel Jaxen Whetzel and Phoenix Wilson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Michael Whetzel (Judy); and son-in-law, Mathew Mason. The graveside service with military honors for CSM Whetzel will be held 10 o’clock, Friday, October 1st, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC.
