    Mrs. Joye H. Broome

    April 26, 1931 - March 8, 2022

Funeral services for Joye Hindman Broome, 90, of Columbia, will be held at 2 o’clock, Monday, March 14, 2022, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel with The Rev. Jill Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o’clock. All are welcome to attend, however, a livestream of Ms. Joye’s service will be available by visiting her tribute wall at ShivesFuneralHome.com. Originally from Fort Lawn, SC, Joye was born on April 26, 1931. She was the daughter of the late Clyde Judson Hindman and Shirley Robertson Hindman. Joye was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 56 years, Willie “Bill” Edward Broome; and brothers, Clyde Judson Hindman, Jr. and James Glen Hindman; and sister, Shirley H. “Lib” Wright. Ms. Joye is survived by brothers, William R. Hindman and John Earl Hindman; sisters, Gloria Clements and Hazel Burrows; and several nieces, nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews who loved her dearly. A graduate of Columbia School of Nursing in 1952, Joye Broome dedicated her life to unconditionally serving others in need. For over 40 years, Joye worked as a Registered Nurse, with over 30 years at Richland Memorial Hospital, now Prisma Health Richland, and several years at the old Columbia Hospital. Many of those years were spent in the emergency room, working night shifts and as supervisor and mentor to several generations of nurses. A stickler for detail, with ceaseless energy and compassion, Joye touched many lives as she cared for her patients, and then finally retired to care for her ailing husband, Bill. An adventurous spirit, Joye loved to travel, but was most at peace tending her garden at her home in Forest Acres. She also loved animals, especially dogs, and gave several unwanted dogs a wonderful life. Joye spent her last years caring for her great-nephews, Jack and Ryan, visiting with friends, and working in her yard. She died peacefully in her home, surrounded by family and friends on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.
