Kathryn Jarvis Barnes, 99, died peacefully Tuesday, December 7, 2021. Kathryn was born in Scranton, NC on April 9, 1922. She grew up in Dare and Hyde Counties in eastern North Carolina. Upon graduating high school, she attended Nursing School in Lumberton, NC where she met and married her husband, Cecil R. Barnes. They were married for 62 years until his passing on January 5th 2006. They raised four children; Elizabeth Ann Downs, Cecil R. Barnes Jr., Carolyn B. Egbert, and Russell W. Barnes. She has many grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she held close to her heart. Kathryn was best known to her close friends as “Kitty”. She was a stay-at-home working mother and took great pride in her children. She was extremely talented in homemaking; i.e. best cook ever, and her ability to sew clothing for her daughters. She loved reading and was a woman of great faith. She loved her family, her friends and her church. She belonged to the Methodist Church in Lumberton, NC for many years. After moving to Columbia, SC, she joined Spring Valley Presbyterian Church where she made many friends. She never shied away from hard work. Being married to a traveling salesman required her to play the dual role of both parents often times being the disciplinarian and comforter. She will be greatly missed. A private graveside service will be held at 1 o’clock Monday, December 13th at the Spring Valley Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden, 125 Sparkleberry Lane, Columbia, SC 29229, with Rev. Jack Heinsohn officiating. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to Women of the Church, Spring Valley Presbyterian Church at the above address.
