Mrs. Kayoko Sherwood

Mrs. Kayoko Sherwood, 86, of Columbia, SC, passed away July 31, 2021. Kayoko joined Soka Gakkai in Yamagata, Japan in 1954 at the age of 19. She arrived in The United States in March of 1956. As a pioneer member, Kayoko contributed to American Kosen-Rufu for 65 years. Undeniably known as the “Ultimate Shakabuku Queen.” Kayoko whole-heartedly shared this Buddhism at every possible opportunity, encouraging thousands of people. She married George Topalian (deceased) and bore three daughters. She later married Jessup Sherwood (deceased) and bore a son, Jessup Sherwood II (deceased). Kayoko is survived by her three daughters; Grace Monts (Richard), Carol Muckenfuss (Ross), Linda Pastor (Enrique), Four Grandchildren; Andy, Crystal, Kazue, Melissa, and six great-grandchildren; Addie, Dalton, Korie, Will, Easton, and Anders. Kayoko enjoyed reading The Gosho daily, studying President Ikeda’s guidance, and sharing this Buddhism. She also enjoyed singing karaoke, cooking, and spending time with family. Kayoko hosted SGI-USA meetings in her home, a Citadel, for Kosen-Rufu for over 20 years. She actualized her long-cherished goal to build a harmonious family. Prior to her passing, all three generations were chanting together and doing Gongyo.
