Larry Gene DuBois, 76, of Columbia, passed away January 19, 2022, following a three-year struggle with ALS and Parkinson's Disease. Born in Tucson, Arizona to the late William and Dorothy Edwards DuBois, Larry was married to Anita Lohrbach DuBois for 50 years.
While stationed with the US Air Force in Southeast Asia, Larry committed his life to sharing the Gospel in full-time cross-cultural ministry. He met his wife Anita at Columbia Bible College in Columbia, SC; they were married on July 3, 1971. After two years in church-based ministry, they joined OMF International. They and their two preschool-aged daughters began an eight-year Church Planting ministry among an indigenous people group spanning Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, Philippines. His greatest joy while working with this emerging church people group was translating the book of James into the Western Tawbuid dialect. Another daughter and a son were born during those years.
Larry was heavily involved in lay ministry with his home church, Grace Baptist in Sarasota, FL. He taught Adult Sunday School electives, directed the Children's Church Program and trained the teachers. He also led a church-based discipleship group (Navigator's 2:7) through its two-year curriculum. Larry returned to Columbia International University for graduate studies in 1988, earning a Master's in Christian Education in 1993. From 1999-2009, Larry and Anita served as teaching and administrative faculty at Koinonia Theological Seminary in Davao City, Mindanao, Philippines.
Back in Columbia, he established Ye Olde Bookbinder as both a service and a ministry: repairing and rebinding a wide range of daily use Bibles, journals and books, and restoring Antique Family Bibles and other antique editions. For eight years, Larry directed the Christian Education ministry at FAFMC (Filipino-American Friendship Ministry of Christ), training teachers of adults in transformational Bible study.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by their four children, Jennifer DuBois, Joy DuBois Flake (Charlie), Deborah DuBois Brannon (Kevin), David DuBois (Amy); 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers Jonathan and Terry (predeceased); and sister, Billie DuBois Klemm.
