July 15, 1925 - January 26, 2021
Lillie McCabe Long, age 95, of Columbia, died peacefully at home, on Tuesday, January 26, 2021. Born in Columbia on July 15, 1925, she was the daughter of the late John and Lillie Jourdan McCabe. Lillie graduated from Dreher High School, and went on to receive her Bachelor's degree from Winthrop University. As a devoted teacher, Mrs. Long's more than 30 years of work with the children of Bradley Elementary had a tremendous impact on the lives of the many who attended there. Lillie was a person of great faith, and was a charter member of St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church, where she served in a number of ministries, including as a former head of the altar guild. Her warm and inviting spirit will surely be missed by family and friends who knew and loved her. Lillie is survived by her nephews, Donald E. Asay of Lexington, KY, John McCabe Asay of Charlotte, NC, J. Michael McCabe of Columbia, and William M. Hunter of Columbia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Richard Filmore Long, and her sister, Mary Asay. The family wishes to especially thank Ms. Nellie Pelzer, who lovingly cared for Lillie for many years and also her caregivers from Daybreak and Heart of Hospice. A private graveside service will be held at 2 o’clock, Thursday, January 28, 2021, at St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church with the Rev. Charles Smith officiating. Due to Covid, those in attendance are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing guidelines. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church at 6408 Bridgewood Road, Columbia, SC 29206.
