Mrs. Myra Montieth Long McEachern

Myra Montieth Long McEachern, 100, of Columbia, peacefully passed away on Thursday, February 17, 2022. Born June 23, 1921, in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Bennie Samuel Livingston Long and Julia Pearl McMichael Long. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Furman Edward McEachern; brothers, Samuel W. Long, O’Neil P. Long, Alec Long, and Clarendon Long; sister, Eva Kerlin; as well as her son-in-law, Edward C. Smoak. Mrs. McEachern was born in North, SC, and raised in the Appalachian Mountains in the small towns of Flat Rock and Hendersonville, North Carolina. As a young woman, she attended Chicora College in Columbia. She worked at Lorick and Lowrance Mercantile on Main Street and as a nanny for the Cole family (Mary Ann, Lucy, Sue, and Carolyn) of Columbia, until she married and began a family of her own. Mrs. McEachern was a wonderful cook and always kept her home open to people in her community, especially her children’s friends. Blessed with a remarkable talent for growing plants from seeds, she could often be found in her yard gardening. She loved to fish and spend time on the family boat at Lake Murray. She also enjoyed crafting and sewing. Mrs. McEachern volunteered her time with the Boy Scouts of America and was the Den Mother of Troop #93. She was a dedicated member and volunteer at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church in Columbia. Surviving are her children, Donald Edward McEachern (Dorothy) of Lexington, David Furman McEachern, Sr. (Shawna) of Columbia, Carolyn M. Smoak of Columbia, and Debra M. Luhn (Robert) of Charleston; grandchildren, Shayne Smoak Patterson (Carl), Jodie Almeida, Robert Luhn, Jr., Shelley Smoak Manning, Cynthia Paige Elders (Woodrow), David Furman McEachern, Jr. (Emily); great grandchildren, Kaitlin Bryan (Brandon), Jack Paul, Samuel Almeida, Woodrow Elders III; great-great grandchildren, Ella Lawson, Tennessee Bryan, Ridge Bryan; her sister, Lurene Bivings of California; as well as numerous extended family and friends. A memorial service for Mrs. McEachern will be held at 2 o'clock, Saturday, March 5th at Kilbourne Park Baptist Church with Pastor Terry Smoak officiating. The family will briefly receive friends following the service in the church sanctuary. A private burial will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family would like to give a special thank you to Senior Resources and National Health Care (Parklane) for the care and love they shared with her.
