A funeral service for Peggy Motley Ford, 88, of Columbia, will be held 11 o’clock, Monday, November 8, 2021, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel with The Rev. Dr. Benjamin Newman officiating. Burial will follow at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends prior the service beginning at 10 o’clock. All are welcome to attend, however, masks and social distancing practices are strongly encouraged. Born in Columbia, on October 20, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Wade Hampton Motley, Sr. and Gladys Aurtey Motley. She was the fourth of eight children. She graduated from Columbia High School and worked most of her career at Southern Bell Telephone Company where she was switchboard operator and later as dispatcher for AT&T. She was a long-time member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church where she was active and enjoyed serving in various capacities, including as a Sunday School Teacher. Peggy also enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves, sewing (She was an excellent seamstress-making some of her own clothes), traveling to Myrtle Beach with friends, swimming with her sister, Frances. Survivors are her loving husband, Doug; daughters Alice F. Hills (Marshall) of Charleston, SC, Micah P. Durham (Mike) of Hickory, NC; granddaughter, Glennis L. Derrick of West Columbia, SC, and great-grandsons, Ethan and Gage; brothers, James E. Motley of Murrells Inlet, SC, Mason E. Motley (Mamie) of Columbia, and Robert “Fred” Motley, Sr. (Lynn) of Lexington, SC; along with many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Frances M. Fagan, Annette M. Winters; brothers, Wade H. Motley, II, and John G. Motley. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 140 Stoneridge Dr., Ste# 640, Columbia, SC, 29210, or to a charity of one’s choice. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the hospice staff at Agape Hospice House of the Midlands, as well as the staff at Colonial Gardens Assisted Living and Memory Care for their compassionate care of Peggy.
