Major Victor Samuel Brown, US Army (Ret.), 85, of Elgin, died Sunday, August 8, 2021. Born May 10, 1936, in Rockland, Maine, he was the son of the late Victor Samuel Brown, Sr. and Jean Bowie Mack Brown. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Maureen Logan Brown and his sister, Mary Fletcher DiPietro. Major Brown retired from the US Army after honorably serving his country for more than 20 years. He was a Vietnam War veteran and received many commendations for his service, including, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantryman’s Medal Badge, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Good Conduct Medal, as well as many others. Following his military career, Major Brown was employed by Boozer Lumber in Columbia for 21 years. Major Brown enjoyed golfing and bowling. He was a novice craftsman and enjoyed woodworking. Major Brown’s greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. They will greatly miss his presence, sense of humor, quick wit, and famous “Blackened Chicken”. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Nancy Lee Brown; children, Jeffrey Scott Brown (Betty) of New Market, AL, Stephen O’Neil Matis, III (Kathy) of Charlotte, NC, Julie Beth Dail (Jeff) of Charlotte, NC, Sherry Matis Phillips (Bruce) of Columbia, and Sandra Kay Mechling (Scott) of Camden. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ashley Brown (Ben Florence), Justin Matis (Erica), Michael Matis (Katlyn), Austin Spolski (Matt), Scott Mechling, Jr., William Mechling, Mary Logan Dail, Thomas Victor Dail, Harrison Phillips, and Marissa Phillips; great grandchildren, Piper Matis, Harley Matis, Nolan Spolski, Natalee Spolski, as well as a multitude of nieces, nephews, and other extended family. The funeral service for Major Brown will be held at 1 o’clock Thursday, August 12th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel with Rev. Ed Stewart officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at 2 o’clock at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home beginning at 12 o’clock noon. Memorials May be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.
