Abraham Wilson Gossett, 93, of Columbia, died Thursday, December 13, 2012. Born in the town of Springfield, SC, on February 18, 1919, he was a son of the late Abraham L. and Rhoda Ann Williams Gossett. Mr. Gossett was a member of Eau Claire Baptist Church, the Charity Sunday School Class and the XYZ Club. He worked for King Pontiac, Hampton Pontiac and retired from Jim Moore Cadillac. Mr. Gossett served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II, as a member of the 873rd bombardment squadron. He was stationed on Guam for the last eleven months of the war, and was discharged on December 13, 1945.
Mr. Gossett loved his wife, Erleen, his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and Nascar; and he took great pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Erleen Zander Gossett; sons, Bruce W. (Sherrie) Gossett of Lexington, Dale L. (Vickie) Gossett of Gilbert; daughter, Sharon A. (Lee) Gossett Benjamin of Clinton; sister, Reba White of Springfield, SC; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, James "Jim", Hammond and Marvin Gossett; sisters, Coloa Johnstone, Myrtle Corbett, Callie (Thomas) Furtick and Mary Hyman Smith.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of Mr. Gossett will be held at 2 o'clock, Saturday, December 15, 2012 at Eau Claire Baptist Church with the Rev. James A. Goudelock officiating. Interment will follow in Springfield Cemetery, Springfield, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock. Shives Funeral Home is assisting the family.
