Adair Castles Long

Adair Castles Long, born in 1933 in the Greenbrier community of Fairfield County, South Carolina, to Ruby and Marion Castles, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 1, 2026. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In 1951, Adair married the love of her life, John Thurrell Long. They shared 60 years of marriage, building a home, raising a family, and tending a beautiful backyard garden together. Adair retired as South Area Manager at the University of South Carolina, where she was known for her dedication and hard work.

Adair was an accomplished seamstress, gardener, and cook, and she poured her talents into caring for the people she loved. Her table was full, her hands were never idle, and her family was always cared for. She loved to sing, especially with her grandchildren on the swing on her back porch, looking out over the garden she and John had planted with such love. She never greeted her grandchildren and great-grandchildren empty-handed; there was always a goody bag waiting for them, a small compilation of gifts that carried a great deal of love.

Above all, Adair loved the Lord. Her faith was the foundation of her life, and she was a strong Christian influence on her children and grandchildren, leading by example in all she did.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John Thurrell Long; her son, Rusty; her daughter, Tracey; and her sisters, Marion Ruby Fanning and Emily Windham.

She is survived by her sons, Tony (Donya) and Chris; her granddaughters, Melissa (Lance), Mandy (Stephen), and Marie (Trevor); and her great-grandchildren, Chad, Caroline, Cole, Emily, Matt, Owen, Bennett, Daniel, and Natalie.

The graveside service will be held at 2 o’clock on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at Greenbrier United Methodist Church Cemetery, 681 Greenbrier Mossydale Rd. Winnsboro, SC with Reverend Johnathan Harris officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Adair's honor to the Greenbrier Cemetery Fund, c/o Warren Rutland, 2199 Rion Road, Winnsboro, SC 29180.

Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
