Obituary

Alan Kent Brooks, 65, of Columbia, died Wednesday, March 31, 2021. Born December 15, 1955, in Columbia, he was a son of the late Paul and Ruby Buckles Brooks.

Mr. Brooks was a lifelong resident of Columbia and a lifetime member of College Place United Methodist Church. He graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1973 and then attended Midlands Technical College. In his younger years, Mr. Brooks was known as a youth baseball and softball umpire for Columbia Parks and Recreation. He was a licensed electrician and was employed by Brad's Electric, Inc. since the inception of the company. Mr. Brooks was very dedicated to his profession and was the go-to electrician for his church, its members, and his Eau Claire neighbors. He enjoyed gardening and always impressed his friends and family with his green thumb. Mr. Brooks canned vegetables every spring, sending his famous hot peppers throughout the southeast. He will be remembered for his friendly disposition and his ability to make lasting friendships. One of his greatest joys was his annual camping and fishing trip to "Turtle Cove", at Lake Wateree, with his childhood friends.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Merritt Brooks; sister, Debbie Avery (Wes) of Columbia; several nieces and nephews, as well as his two loyal companions, Polly Anna and Beacon.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date and will be announced by Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Oliver Gospel Mission, 1100 Taylor St, Columbia, SC 29201.
