Obituary

Alan M. Osterweil, 91, died unexpectedly on Thursday, November 9, 2023, in Charlotte, NC surrounded by his children. Born in Newark, NJ on December 7, 1931, Mr. Osterweil was the beloved son of the late Pearl and Emanuel Osterweil.

He was a graduate of Lafayette College where he received a BA degree in 1956. He then enlisted in the United States Navy and served during the Suez Crisis. After his military service, he attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1964. He was a career attorney at the US Department of Veteran Affairs until his retirement. Mr. Osterweil was a life-long member of Beth Shalom Synagogue and engaged in service to the Columbia Jewish community. He recently moved to North Carolina to be near his children and grandchildren. He lived a fulfilling and fun-loving life and had a joke for every occasion.

Surviving are his children, Heather Lee Osterweil, of Charlotte, NC, and Michael Glen Osterweil (Darshinie) of Concord, NC, three grandchildren, Hunter Gabriel Osterweil, Jacob Isaac Osterweil, and Alexander Michael Osterweil, and two stepchildren, Al Bruner (Lisa), and Laurayne Bruner Velasco (Ferdinand). Mr. Osterweil was also survived by his nieces and nephew whom he loved like his own children, Michele Bernstein Perrick (David), Lowell Bernstein (Kathryn), Beth Bernstein (Rip), all of Columbia, Hilary Bernstein of Charleston, SC, and Anne Bernstein (Joel) of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and his great nieces, Danna Cook (Sam), Rebecca Friedman (Louis), Caroline Sanders, Isabel Sanders, Samantha Bernstein, and Sydney Bernstein, and his great nephew, Evan Bernstein. Mr. Osterweil was pre-deceased by his beloved sister, Carol Bernstein, and nephew, Samuel Keith Bernstein.

The graveside funeral will be held on Friday, November 10th at 1 o'clock at the Columbia Hebrew Benevolent Society Cemetery, 714 Blanding St, Columbia. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Carol O. Bernstein Social Fund at Beth Shalom Synagogue, 5827 N Trenholm Rd, Columbia, SC 29206 or a charity of one's choosing.
