Obituary

Dr. Albert Sidney Allen, Sr. peacefully passed from this earthly life to his heavenly home on March 7, 2016 at age 93. He was born on May 30, 1922 in Columbia, SC. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1939 and attended the University of SC, where he was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Delta premedical fraternity. He earned his MD degree from the Medical College of SC in Charleston in 1945 at age 23 and was a member of the Phi Rho Sigma medical fraternity. He served his internship at Baltimore City Hospitals and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Columbia Hospital. He served our nation during World War II with the Army Air Corps, stationed in Greenville SC. During the Korean War he served with the 7th Calvary Regiment in the Far East Theater on the Northern Island of Japan. Dr. Allen practiced medicine in the Eau Claire community of Columbia for 50 years (1948-1998) retiring at age 76. He was a well-respected member of the Columbia Medical Society, SC Medical Association, Southern Medical Association, and American Medical Association and was on the senior consulting staffs of the SC Baptist, Richland Memorial and Providence Hospitals for many years.

Dr. Allen was predeceased by his parents, Albert Sidney Allen and Nellie Lee Hayes Allen of Columbia, his brother Harry Lee Allen of Charleston, and his beloved wife of 55 years, Sara Margaret "Toop" Napier Allen. He is survived by his devoted children, Dr. Lee Ann Naylor (Drew) of Winston-Salem, NC, Susan Allen of Mt. Pleasant, and Dr. Albert Allen (Kelli) of Newberry. He was very proud of each of them as well as his precious grandchildren, Tripp McLaughlin, Lane McLaughlin, Kristen Naylor Kelly (Alex), Sara Beth Naylor, Brooks Allen, Kendall Allen, Whitney Allen, and Sidney Allen. He is also survived by his sister, Annelle Allen Earles of Columbia and several special nieces and nephews.

Dr. Allen was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Columbia. Even into his later years he enjoyed keeping up with the stock market, current events, and gardening, always taking pride in his tomato crop. He had a keen sense of humor and a strong dedication to his family and his patients. Although he liked to call himself an "elderly recluse", he was in his own words "dearly loved by his family, friends, and by most of his patients." He will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o'clock, Wednesday, March 9th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road, Ext., Columbia. There will be a private burial service.
