Obituary

A. Louie Winter, Jr., 92, of Columbia, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Friday, March 6, 2020. Born on September 6, 1927 in Sandersville, Georgia. He was a son of Louie Sr. and Thelma Stephens Winter.

Louie is survived by his loving wife, Gladys Welch Winter; sons, Rev. Robert Winter (Ann), Steve Winter (Debbie); son-in-law, Paul Howard; five grandchildren, Jonathan Winter (Alice), Michael Winter (Danni); Keith Winter (Lauren), Katherine Coleman (Trey) and Katelyn Howard; great granddaughter, Mackenzie Winter; one great grandson, Henri Coleman and a great granddaughter due in May; sister, Thelma Winter; brother, Ned Winter (Sandee); step daughters, Rita Whitesides (Joel), Jeannie Fuller (Rev. Chip), and Pam Carr (Rev. Stephen); six grandchildren, Mary Frampton Whitesides, Emily Bowen (Jake) and great grandson due in June, Caroline Fuller, John Fuller (Mallory), Catherine Carr, and Matt Carr (Jeanne), all of whom have been a wonderful and loving family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Johnnie Keith Winter, to whom he was married for 50 years and loved so very much; and his precious daughter, Melanie Winter Howard.

He was a member of Shandon Baptist Church for over 57 years and served in many capacities. He was active in both local and foreign missions. He was also active in several civic clubs serving as President of the Jaycees, Lions Club, Breakfast Optimist Club and the Gideon's, and was a 32-degree Mason.

Louie grew up in Pooler, Georgia and joined the military when he was just 17 years old. He served over four years in the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserve during WWII. After returning home, he graduated from Marlow High School. He attended West Georgia College and graduated from Georgia Teachers College with a BS Degree in Industrial Education and received his master's degree in Industrial Education from North Carolina State University and held the LUTC Degree. He served as a teacher for seven years at three different schools within the state of Georgia. After his teaching career, he became a State Farm Insurance Agent in Sylvania, GA, and after three years, he became a District Manager for State Farm. He was blessed to be able to recruit and train a group of agents who ranked in the top 50 District for 27 years in the US and Canada out of over 1300 total Districts in the company. He was blessed to be able to recruit and train a group of agents whose district was in the top 50 of over 1300 in the US and Canada for 27 years. Louie was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He also loved his church, but above all he loved and served his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The service for Mr. Winter will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 13th, at Shandon Baptist Church, 5250 Forest Drive, Columbia with the Rev. L. Barry Gray officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 11:30 a.m. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to Impact Ministries, Myrtle Beach and the Live Sent Mission Fund at Shandon Baptist Church.
