Columbia – Almena Truluck Layton, 93, of Columbia, died peacefully Saturday, November 21, 2015. Born May 10, 1922 in Olanta, SC, she was a daughter of the late A.P. and Ruth Jordan Truluck. Mrs. Layton was a woman of faith. She was an avid reader, excellent storyteller, expert seamstress, a survivor of cancer and most importantly was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend who will be missed by all.
Survivors include her sons, Joe W. Layton (Doris), and Alonzo M. "Lon" Layton (Cindy); grandchildren, Allison Simmonds (Stuart), Laura Layton Studley (Shawn), Melanie Layton Prewitt (Greg), Amy Layton Eubanks (Jim), Jeff Layton (Debra), Andrew Layton, (Jenny), Marley Newsome (Ryan), Tommy Smyrl, III, Mary Beth Stalnaker (Mike), Craig Giles (Karen), Tara Farmer (Phil), Brad Giles (Shelley) and 28 great grandchildren; son-in-law, Charles Gibson; sister-in-law, Gloria Truluck and special friend, Olivia Bibb. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin G. Layton; a son, Danny T. Layton; daughters, Kay Layton Smyrl, Jane Layton Gibson; brother, Jack L. Truluck; sisters, Marilyn M. Truluck and Rebecca Attuso.
The funeral service for Mrs. Layton will be held 2 o'clock, Tuesday, November 24th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext, Columbia. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1 o'clock.
