Mr. Amazia Zivony, 87, of West Columbia, died on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

Amazia was born in 1936 in Tel Aviv, Israel, son of Zalman and Emma Zivony, one of two children with his sister Edna. He grew up in Tel Aviv as well as on kibbutz Mizra. He then served as a paratrooper in the Israeli Army from 1954-1956. After his service he came to the US to seek education at NYU and then relocated to Hartford, Connecticut to attend the University of Hartford. There he met his future wife Leah in 1960 and they were married in 1963. Soon after he got his Master's Degree from University of Pennsylvania. he also pursued additional secondary education through the Hebrew Union College where obtained his teaching certificate.

After graduation, he began work in the textile business, continuing on this career path that took him on travels to Europe, South and Central America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. After retirement from the textile business, he began his second career as a high school teacher. He taught geography, religion, Hebrew, World History and was beloved by his students and colleagues.

After his retirement from teaching, he and Leah continued their love of travel with adventures in California, Arizona, Alaska, Iceland, and Russia among others. After his diagnosis with Parkinson's in 2015, he became involved in Parkinson's organizations, making friends through boxing while continuing to enjoy time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mr. Zivony will be held at 11 o'clock, Tuesday, May 7th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, with Rabbi Erik Uriarte officiating. Burial will follow in Hebrew Benevolent Society Cemetery, 714 Blanding Street, Columbia. A livestream of the service will be available at ShivesFuneralHome.com.
