The City of Columbia has lost a favored son, a valued salesman, and a community theater star.
Andrew D. Zalkin, 70, of Columbia, died at his home on December 15, 2023. He was the first-born son of Harriett Rivkin Zalkin and Robert M. Zalkin. Andrew grew up in Greensboro, NC, and later earned his bachelor's degree from The University of South Carolina. Previously, he was employed by The Enamelist in Five Points, where he used his artistic abilities creating jewelry. Andrew was best known as the owner and operator of the Army-Navy Surplus store in Columbia and will be dearly missed by the many friends that shopped with him. He participated in Columbia's Community Theatre for many years, acting and providing costumes for their productions. Andrew will be remembered fondly for his magical piano skills at the "Andy Parties" and his opinions on everything. His friendly disposition allowed Andrew to navigate his life without ever meeting a stranger.
Survivors include his sister, Robin Zalkin Brown; brother, Joseph R. Zalkin, and many cousins.
The graveside service for Mr. Zalkin will be held at 1 o'clock Friday, December 22nd at Whaley Street Jewish Cemetery, 1300 Whaley Street , Columbia, SC. Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
