Obituary

Ann Algar Gibson, 70, of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. Born in Lake City, South Carolina, on August 20, 1952, she was a daughter of the late James Frank Algar and Elizabeth "Betty" Bunch Algar. Ann was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian and most recently attended Trinity Baptist Church. She was the loving wife for over 39 years to Henry Edward Gibson.

Ann was a graduate of Lower Richland High School and attended Columbia College. She retired after 28 years from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and has been enjoying her time with her grandchildren ever since. Ann was a true firecracker. Although she was strong-willed, passionate, and feisty, she was still very nurturing and took great pride in caring for her family. She was the second vice president of the Greater Irmo Lions Club, a member of the Water Environment Association of South Carolina, and formerly served with the scout groups at the Carolina football games. Ann was an avid Carolina Gamecock fan and enjoyed collectables, especially snow babies. Her favorite hobby of all was shopping.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Dallas Gibson Gear (Matthew); stepdaughters, Valerie G. Sherenco (Ronald), Debra G. Walters, and April G. Elwood; grandchildren, Katie S. Gear, Brittany E. Walters, Ryan J. Sherenco, Randon C. Sherenco, and Mackenzie B. Elwood; sisters, Linda Lee Algar and Susan Richman. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, William Eugene "Gene" Forrester.

The funeral service for Mrs. Gibson will be held at 10:30 o'clock on Tuesday, May 16th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia, SC. The family will receive friends the evening prior to the service from 5 until 7:30 o'clock. A private burial will take place at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
