Ann Ashley Smith, 92, of Columbia, died Sunday, September 4, 2016. Born in Greenville, SC to the late Avery and Della Ashley, she grew up in Anderson, SC, and was married to the late John Mark Smith, Jr. Mrs. Smith was a longtime member of St. John's United Methodist Church, Rock Hill, until moving to Columbia to be near her family. She was an avid gardener until recently. Mrs. Smith was a person with an incredible spirit and optimism, and a great sense of humor that she showed until the end.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Meg Kalmbach (Ken) of Suwanee, GA; son, John M. Smith, III (Karen) of Lake Wateree; grandchildren, David Robinson, Susan Gilfillan, Mason Smith and Mary Catherine Navarro; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Emily Carley. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two of her sisters.

A memorial service for Mrs. Smith will be held at 1 o'clock, Wednesday, September 14th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Rd. Ext., Columbia, with Dr. George D. Crow, III officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home, following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Ct., Glen Allen, VA 23060-9979.
